IT Intern

Grand Forks County is seeking a motivated IT Intern through the INTERNGF program, from (on or around) May 18 - Aug 21, 2026. This opportunity is available exclusively to University of North Dakota (UND) students and offers hands-on experience supporting and maintaining technology systems in a public sector environment.

This internship provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience supporting users, configuring hardware and software, and assisting with the maintenance of network infrastructure. The IT Intern will work alongside experienced IT professionals to troubleshoot issues, support daily operations, and participate in projects that contribute to the efficiency and security of the organization. This is an excellent opportunity for students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting while developing valuable technical and professional skills.

As an IT Intern you will assist with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Providing technical support to employees, troubleshooting issues and helping resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Assisting with the setup, configuration, and maintenance of desktops, laptops, and peripherals.
  • Collaborating with the IT team to document and update the knowledge base, including common issues and solutions, network configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Assisting with the installation, configuration, maintenance, and testing of network equipment, including routers and switches.
  • Assisting with the installation, configuration, maintenance, and testing of software applications.
  • Communicating effectively with end users by providing guidance and training on IT tools and applications.
  • Assisting with tracking and managing IT inventory, including hardware and software.
  • Participating in special projects that support the efficiency, improvement, and security of the organization.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Currently pursuing a degree or certification in an Information Technology or related field.
  • Knowledgeable with the basic understanding of computer hardware, software, operating systems, and networking concepts, including TCP/IP, routing, and switching.
  • Familiar with troubleshooting common IT issues, such as network connectivity, printer problems, and software malfunctions.
  • Experienced in configuring or maintaining network devices such as routers, switches, or firewalls is a plus.
  • Strong with problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent with communication skills and a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Knowledgeable of network security principles and best practices is desirable.

Status and Hours: Part-time (up to 30 hours per week). There might be a variation to work hours and days to support the department and County needs. This position is not eligible for telework.

This position requires Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background and certification.
